Karma can be understood as metaphysical mechanics, or simply cause and effect. Especially due to delusion, effects become entrenched and may be seen far from their caues. In the framework of the eight consciousnesses, the storehouse consciousness (alaya-vijnana) is the mind-ground on which karma operates.
